Our team includes former military leaders, management consultants, counselors, statisticians, designers, writers, social media specialists, website developers, eLearning experts and strategic communications professionals. With well over a hundred years accumulated experience in military service and military family support, the Bowen management team is mission-focused and passionate about our organization, our customers and those we serve. We know how to work hard, have a good time and get the job done — on time, on target, on budget and with the success of our customers always in mind.

Tom Mayberry

Chairman of the Board and Chief Financial Officer

The product of a 20-year Marine Corps career that took him to all four hemispheres of the globe — including Haiti, Somalia and Iraq — Tom brings a strong desire to provide on-budget solutions that truly work for our clients. In addition to his training as an artillery officer, Tom is a graduate of the Joint Information Operations Planners Course at the Joint Forces Staff College and the Civil Affairs Qualification Course at U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center. This training, along with real world application during Operation Iraqi Freedom, gave him uncommon insight into the power of information and perception in reaching target audiences. Prior to his time in Iraq, Tom served two years at Programs and Resources, Headquarters Marine Corps in the Pentagon. His time there gave him an exceptional understanding of the demands of reconciling service, inter-service and OSD budgetary requirements, and also left him with a deep appreciation of the challenges our clients face in fiscally austere times. Tom received a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Kansas and a master’s in business administration from Averett University. He is married to the remarkable Deborah Mayberry, and enjoys reading, being outdoors and spending time with his family.

Deborah Mayberry

Founder and Chief Executive Officer

A visionary with a reputation for big ideas, Debbie founded The Bowen Group in 2006 following 20 years of service as a licensed mental health clinician and policy analyst for the United States Marine Corps. Leveraging her policy expertise with emerging medias and technology, Debbie has led her company in the design of creative, innovative wellness solutions for the military and veteran communities, in use today by thousands of beneficiaries. This passion to innovate has resulted in Debbie and her staff emerging as the “go to” creative thought leaders and trusted partners for identifying new ways to reach and serve the military and veteran population. Debbie has a Master of Science in Psychology from the University of Kansas, is a certified executive coach through the College of Executive Coaching and was a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) for many years. She is a founding board member of the Quality of Life Foundation, overseeing the creation of the Severely Wounded Veteran Family Caregiver Program, and served as a board member for the U.S. International Committee on Disabilities. She is currently active in Women’s President Organization, Committee of 200 (C200), and Women Impacting Public Policy. Consistent with her personal values, Debbie founded Bowen Cares to promote employee involvement in local and global community causes, contributing time and financial support to non-profit organizations that promote mental health and wellness within their communities. Debbie resides in northern Virginia with her business partner and husband of 30 years, Tom, a retired Marine Corps artillery officer. They are proud parents of two adult daughters.

Ray Babbie

President

Ray began his career as a Marine Mustang (enlisted to officer), where he gained an appreciation for contributions to mission accomplishment across the spectrum. As president of The Bowen Group, Ray uses the experience gained through his 20-year military career to ensure The Bowen Group has the proper tools and right people to succeed in improving the health and wellness of service members, Veterans and their families. A firm believer in servant-leadership, Ray feels strongly about serving the people at The Bowen Group — and, through them, The Bowen Group’s customers. Throughout Ray’s 30 years as a logistics analyst, program manager, business development and capture manager, he has cultivated a passion for improving processes and procedures for his staff and, ultimately, his customers. Ray has challenged all members of The Bowen Group to look for new and innovative ways to live the company’s core values of serving our country and serving our community. Ray received his Bachelor of Science in Corporate Communications from Southern Connecticut State University. In his spare time, he likes to kayak, hike, read, run and work on cars. He is enjoying an empty nest and remains supportive of his 5 children that are pursuing their dreams. Tom Baker

Vice President of Operations

Tom is the vice president of operations for Health and Wellness Services at The Bowen Group. With more than 30 years of professional services delivery experience and a background in business management, Tom is a master at managing program costs, schedules and technical performance. Tom’s knowledge and administrative abilities make him a valued advisor to program managers and staff, as he interfaces with both government stakeholders and teaming partners on contract deliverables, timeline, staff, funds, expectations and solutions. His leadership ability is clearly demonstrated by his executive oversight over our military and veteran health and wellness services portfolio to include our 24/7 call center operations. Tom even finds time to manage Bowen’s IT network systems and support. Tom’s eagle eye for details and his ability to see the big picture are tremendous assets to the team at Bowen. Tom has spent many years serving those who have served. He is very appreciative of the many sacrifices made by service members and their families, and is honored to have dedicated more than 18 years working with federal government contractors who support Department of Defense branches of military service. Tom finds the work he does at Bowen both professionally and personally rewarding, and we are all grateful for his direction and expertise. In addition to spending quality time with his wife, Beth, and their growing family, Tom enjoys traveling — he’s even visited all 50 states and most U.S. territories!

Lawrence Gaines

Vice President of Business Management and Finance

As vice president of business management and finance at the Bowen Group, Lawrence oversees and assists in the management of the company’s overall execution including all contractual matters and contracting items. He is the liaison to client contracting offices and manages the company’s federal contracting schedules. He prepares all pricing proposals for new contracting opportunities and oversees Bowen’s project portfolio management and timekeeping system. Lawrence served over 26 years in the Marine Corps, including more than 17 years working as a fiscal/budget officer and comptroller, overseeing budgets totaling more than $85M annually. His military service included several high-visibility assignments at the Marine Corps Systems Command, Headquarters Marine Corps, the Marine Corps Operational Test and Evaluation Activity (MCOTEA), and the Wounded Warrior Regiment (WWR). Lawrence also supervised all contractual matters for both the WWR and MCOTEA, and managed the operation of all fiscal, supply, logistics and communication efforts. His wealth of experience and personal knowledge of the challenges and rewards of military service add huge depth to The Bowen Group. Lawrence has a Bachelor of Science in Finance from Old Dominion University and a Master of Science in Information Technology Management from the Naval Postgraduate School. He resides with his wife, Dwan, and two daughters, Morgan and Sydney, and enjoys playing golf every chance he gets.

Mary Craig

Vice President of Digital Strategies and Communication

In her role as vice president of digital strategies and communication, Mary Craig oversees strategic communications, marketing, web, content development, social media and training services for a number of Department of Defense client programs, including suicide prevention and financial readiness. With a bachelor’s of science in psychology from the University of Illinois and more than 25 years total experience working in military support programs, Mary’s background includes eight years working at the Marine Corps installation and branch headquarters levels, and 10+ years serving at the executive level for government clients. She has dedicated her life’s work to developing and operating programs that educate the military community, promote resilience and connect users to critical readiness programs and services. Due to her expertise in military family issues and project management, Mary was involved in the Marines Corps pilot program that inspired the Department of Defense Military OneSource program, a quality of life website created to be a one-stop source for social support for all branches of the military and their families. Since 2005, Mary has worked with multiple clients, inspiring her teams to create innovative solutions for service members and families throughout their military journey. Mary’s love for the military runs deep and spans generations, as she is both a Marine Corps spouse and the proud mother of a Marine. In her spare time, Mary is a competitive power lifter and a CrossFit coach.

Sarah Coon

Director of Creative Services

Sarah is responsible for overseeing creative services for The Bowen Group’s clients and for our brand. She is a gifted designer, mentor and project manager who inspires her award-winning team of multimedia designers and 508 compliance specialists as they develop creative, leading-edge programs, design concepts and products for The Bowen Group and their delighted customers. Sarah has more than 15 years of wide-range experience in design, with expertise in creative marketing concepts, development and production. Under her leadership, the creative services team has partnered with multiple government and corporate clients to assist with branding and identity design, creating concepts and developing products. In past roles, Sarah was responsible for the design and production of 13 topical newsletters (weekly, monthly, quarterly), digital marketing campaigns and also created long document publications and event material for multiple programs and initiatives. Sarah holds a bachelor’s degree in Art and Visual Technology from George Mason University and is a member of The American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), User Experience Professionals Association and the Interaction Design Foundation. Sarah resides in Virginia with her husband, daughter and two cats. She loves the beach, camping with her family, reading, eating Thai food, and is active in her church community.

Jay Senter

Director of Marine Corps Programs

Jay joined The Bowen Group in 2013 after 23 rewarding years as a Marine Corps officer, during which he served at the battalion, regiment and division staff level, as well as in various Headquarters Marine Corps positions. He has significant experience in manpower and pay policy, organizational management, requirements analysis, and developing creative solutions to solve problems. Bringing his expertise in wounded warrior policy and support, program management and detailed analysis, Jay’s leadership acumen has enhanced relationships between clients, veteran customers and service-level employees at Bowen. Throughout his career, he has sought to coach subordinates and provide an environment that spurs creative thinking and innovation. This focus has resulted in notable success in Bowen’s telephonic life coaching and career coaching programs supporting service members and veterans. In addition, Jay’s technical expertise brings an elevated level of analysis to requirements development and system requirements, improving Bowen’s ability to create and describe solutions to government clients. Jay has a Master of Science in information technology management from Naval Postgraduate School and a Bachelor of Business Administration in accounting from the University of Oklahoma. He volunteers for the Virginia chapter of the Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League. Jay and his wife Christine live in northern Virginia near their three granddaughters and are preparing to be empty nesters as their youngest child graduates high school.

Dr. Charles Christiansen

Director of Strategy and Planning

Dr. Chris Christiansen is director of strategy and planning with The Bowen Group. He is an experienced leader with a proven track record and more than 20 years of progressive, successful experience leading teams and supporting marketing communications, change management, strategy development and business analysis for a range of commercial and federal clients. After enlisting in the United States Navy in 1998, he completed a four-year tour aboard the USS Peleliu (LHA-5) and a second four-year tour at the Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Chris received an honorable discharge from the United States Navy in 2006 and became a senior consultant at the Air Force Headquarters Strategic Planning Directorate. He was hand-picked to join a specialized team of experts to revamp the agency’s strategic planning process and facilitate organizational change across the organization. After supporting this initiative, he continued his service to the Air Force Headquarters Acquisition and Quadrennial Defense Review offices by providing various types of communication strategies for key plans and programs, as well as business analysis to support executive strategic planning. Chris holds a Doctor of Management in Organizational Development and Change and Master of Business Administration from the Colorado Technical University in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
